IT Support for Law Firms: North Shore Law’s Story

Two legal professionals reviewing information on a tablet in a law office

NextGen Automation helped North Shore Law, a law firm in North Vancouver, British Columbia, transition to remote work. Our IT support for law firms combined remote access to office computers, familiarity with legal applications, on-site assistance and ongoing technology planning.

About North Shore Law

Based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, North Shore Law LLP has served clients since 1973. For a legal practice, technology needs to support the people handling client matters, the applications they use and the documents they work with every day.

The challenge: moving work beyond the office

In March 2020, approximately 80% of the firm’s staff began working from home for two to three months. They needed access to their office computers while working remotely.

The approach: familiar systems, practical support

We helped staff connect to their office computers through a virtual private network (VPN). Our on-site and remote IT support also included:

  • Familiarity with legal applications, including Worldox, PCLaw and DivorceMate.
  • Regular on-site visits and help with network issues.
  • Planning discussions covering ageing workstations and software renewals.

This kind of support gives a law firm a useful connection between immediate technology needs and longer-term decisions: what needs attention today, what can wait and what should be planned for next. That is the role of technology alignment and lifecycle management in an ongoing IT relationship.

The results: continuity and responsive help

Administrator Elana valued our understanding of the firm’s systems and our responsiveness when issues affected office productivity. Our familiarity with its technology also helped support her transition into the administrator role.

“They’re always more than willing to help, and to go that extra step to make things easier for me.”

— Elana, Administrator, North Shore Law

What can other law firms learn from this experience?

When evaluating managed IT support for your law firm, look beyond a list of services. Ask how a provider will learn your systems, help your people when work is interrupted and guide upcoming technology decisions. Those conversations can help you assess whether the relationship will fit the way your firm works.
