In the dynamic world of technology, where innovation and creativity know no bounds, it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the diverse minds fueling this industry's evolution. As part of our commitment to diversity and empowerment, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the remarkable women who are part of this journey, breaking barriers and setting new benchmarks in the tech landscape.
Today, we're not just celebrating women in tech; we're giving voice to their experiences, challenges, and triumphs. In this spirit, we had the privilege of sitting down with one of our very own trailblazers, Kelsey Nolting-Pecarskie, whose journey in the tech field is both inspiring and illuminating. Join us as we delve into her story, uncovering the lessons learned and the wisdom gained on her path through the tech world.
A. Originally technology was not something that I was interested in. After High School I worked regular jobs for a few years while being a single parent and it was hard. This inspired me to go back to school and get an actual career. I discussed career options with friends/family and numerous people told me technology would not suit me/I wouldn’t be able to do it – of course this pushed me to prove them wrong.
I enrolled in a Computer Systems Technician course and through that course developed a passion for learning and troubleshooting both hardware and software. I am someone who loves learning new things and working through problems to find a solution, making the IT world perfect as it provides obstacles to overcome and is always growing, changing, and developing.
A. The IT world has not always been inclusive, making it harder for women to succeed. Because of this, there is gender bias and discrimination towards women in tech. I have come across these issues a few times over my 12 years of being in the industry. The solution is to not let other people’s mindset stop you – be confident, do not let others dismiss your ideas, know your worth and always bring your A-game – Being able to change opinions/ideas towards female techs is very uplifting.
A. Be open minded. A woman will bring new ideas and skills to the company that may be missing from a male inclusive team. Diversity will help a company strive.
A. I would say go for it! If tech is something that intrigues you and you have a passion for, don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t or that tech is a “man’s field” - tech is for anyone & everyone.
While men are still primarily dominating the tech world, there is plenty of room for women so don’t be discouraged if your classmates/co-workers are primarily male.
Being a woman in IT is not always easy and sometimes (all the time in my case) you will be the only female on the team. This can be stressful and add extra pressure but remember that as a woman you bring unique ideas/skills which will benefit the whole team.
A. Be open-minded, don’t be afraid to voice your thoughts/opinions. Be detailed, be organized, be willing to learn from mistakes and always be confident.
A. Very early in my career, even applying for jobs, I have gotten comments on how detailed/organized I am or how I look at problems with a different mindset – this brings something new to the table. Being able to look at problems and troubleshoot through a women’s view is an asset. Women think differently and because of that, bring new skills and perspectives. Having a diverse team means more ideas and better problem solving – this is why we need women in tech.
